How to broadcast to all users of your Telegram bot for free

October 23, 20263 min readMGRAM team

A broadcast to your own users is the best way to bring people back to a bot: a new feature, a promo, a launch. Here are three ways to do it, Telegram's limits, and how not to lose users by messaging too often.

In short. You can broadcast to your bot's users with your own code on the Bot API (Telegram allows about 30 messages per second), with a bot builder's broadcast feature, or by connecting the bot to MGRAM and sending own broadcasts for free — to all live users, with click tracking and no code. Whatever you use, don't message more often than it is useful: every block shrinks your audience for good.

Option 1: the Bot API (for developers)

Loop over your users and call sendMessage (or copyMessage for a ready post). Keep in mind:

  • Speed limit. By Telegram's rules a bot without paid broadcasts sends about 30 messages per second. Exceed it and you get error 429 with a pause to respect.
  • Paid broadcasts. Big bots can enable them in @BotFather — up to 1,000 messages per second for 0.1 Star per message above the free limit. Telegram's conditions: at least 100,000 Stars on the bot's balance and 100,000 monthly users.
  • Error 403 means the user blocked the bot — drop them from the list.
  • A queue so a broadcast to 100,000 users can resume where it stopped.

Option 2: a bot builder

Most builders have a broadcast button; limits depend on the builder and plan.

Option 3: MGRAM own broadcasts — free

  1. @mgram_robot → «My bots» → your bot → «Send your own broadcast».
  2. Pick a post from «My posts».
  3. Turn on «Track clicks» to see button clicks.
  4. Start — progress is shown in real time.

Don't lose users

  • Send what people came for: a feature, a selection, a bonus.
  • One or two useful broadcasts a week is a safe pace for most bots.
  • One clear button beats five.

Earn from broadcasts too

From 50 users, a bot connected to MGRAM can accept ad broadcasts: the owner gets 0.021 ₽ per delivered message. You choose the hours, speed and topics you don't accept; one person gets an ad no more than once every 6 hours.
